Dean Gust Petrulas

1936 ~ 2013
I was born in Hiawatha, Utah to parents George and Elizabeth (Katsufakis) Petrulakis on August 10, 1936 where I spent seventeen of my formative years. I attended and graduated from (the old) Carbon High School where I played sports, but became a casualty, as many were, of favoritism by a certain coach!!
I attended the University of Utah for a year and half. I played freshman basketball and traveled with the baseball team. In the interim I transferred to and graduated from Westminster College where I played basketball for three years and was captain my senior year! My college experience was energetically rewarding and fulfilling, which relates to an excellent job history. Member of the Greek Orthodox Church.
My working career began at Packaging Corporation of America, Salt Lake City, where I held various positions. After eight years I became the General Manager of Folding Carton Division. Later I solicited employment with American Pad and Paper (Ampad) North Salt Lake, where I was hired as Plant Manager, later becoming General Manager and Manufacturing Manager-Western Region. I retired after as many might know, American Pad and Paper is one of the companies that Mitt Romney (Bain Capital) and his hit men ruined! Consequently Ampad no longer exists in North Salt Lake or Utah, which is despicable!
I was introduced to golf which agreeably was a hate/love relationship! I did have a hole in one that came with many good/bad scores. But first and foremost I met and played with many outstanding friends.
I was asked many times "why I didn't get married" my stock answer was "I couldn't afford the divorce!" But I did meet the love of my life and soul mate, Judy Morley with whom I spent many enjoyable years. Thank you Judy for being "just Judy"
I am survived by my sister in law Ursula, St. George, Ut., sister in law Anna, Modesto, Ca., nephews George (Karna) Modesto, Ca., Nick (Karen) Alameda, Ca., Dean (Laura) Modesto, Ca., nieces Elizabeth, Kristina, Adrianna, Eleni and nephew Andoni and Judy Morley, Fountain Green, Ut.
Preceded in death by parents, brothers Tony and Pete, sister Sylvia, many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., in the Prophet Elias Church, 5335 South Highland Drive, Holladay, Ut. Friends and family may call Friday, October 25, 2013 at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary 2350 East 1300 South from 6-8 p.m. Trisagion service at 7:00 p.m. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Wally, thanks for communicating with all of us.  I am the son of 

LaVille H.Merrill,M.D who practiced in Hiawatha in the 50ths and 60tths.

I am a retired Cardio-thoracic surgeon.  My wife of 69 years, HILDRED

GLEASON MERRILL, passed away Sept.26, 2013 after six years in

a Skilled Nursing Care unit in Palo Alto, CA. She was a world class Dietitian, a

Super  Institution Manager, and a wonderful Mother, and my Soul Mate!

 She was the daughter of Frank E. and Grace G.Gleason and her sister,Shirley G.Jones lives in Nashville, TN (who is on your e-mail list.)They grew up in Hiawatha. I grew up in Spring Canyon before my father moved to Hiawatha.

It was a long way to take Hillie to a dance in Price, and even a longer way to court her in New York where they moved from Hiawatha during World War II.,which I did two times by train, once with a fraternity pin and once with a diamond ring!

After her graduation from Cornell, she came back to Utah on a Troop Train with

Violin in hand and we were married in the ADPI Sorority house at the U of U while I was in Medical School. In 1944.

HILDRED and I have two sons, and two daughters, fifteen grand and four 

great grandchildren, and two more on the way.

PRICE - John Edward "Big John" Hartzell, age 94, passed away peacefully at his home with family on Aug. 24, 2013. He was born Sept. 1, 1918 in NuMine, Penn., to Alberta Alta Smail and Elmer Hartzell. Dad's family made their trek to Sego, UT in 1923 to attend his ailing grandfather, Edward Hartzell. Later moving to Carbon County where he resided the rest of his life. He went in the coal mine at the early age of 13, where he worked alongside his father and his Uncle Jim. Dad learned black smithing and coal mining from his father. John proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II based out of Camp Carson, Colo., where he received many medals for his sharp shooting abilities. After returning to Carbon County, he worked as a coal miner in several of the local mines including Hiawatha, Wattis, Spring Canyon and Hardscrabble where he made lifelong friends and gained a life full of stories he loved to tell up until the end. He was known for his tall tales and practical jokes. Dad was a proud advocate supporter and strong member of the UMWA with over 70 years of membership. He was an active member of the NRA, enjoyed fishing, camping, gold prospecting, carpentry, auto mechanics and reading. Towards the end of his life he had a special relationship with "grandpa's baby" Lil' Miss Harley, his great great granddaughter with whom he spend every morning sharing his coffee. John married Lucille Adams and they later divorced. He married Twila Jane "Mickie" Hayes Vestal on May 6, 1955 in Grand Junction, Colo., and together they raised eight children. She preceded him in death on July 22, 2003. Survived by his children, John (Elena) Hartzell, North Cape May, N.J.; Janet (David) Meye, Lake Ozark, MO, Jaime Hartzell, Price; Alfreda Hurlich, West Valley, Louise Wilkinson, Salina; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Lula Grundvig, West Valley, Rosalee Buckly, Bothel, Wash. Preceded in death by his wife Twila "Mickie"; four children, Connie Echols, Sharon Stokes, Larry Vestal, Rodger Vestal; siblings, Dorothy Wilcox, Mae Aho, Dewey Hartzell, Alta Knorp, Ernest Hartzell, George Williams, Annie Duran and Charley Williams. I want to thank Dad for the principles he instilled in us, honesty, hard work and truthfulness. A special thanks to his grandchildren Twila Martak and Katie Marquez for tending to his daily needs. With their help he left us with dignity. We love you Dad. Until we meet again. As per John's request there will be no funeral service. A memorial graveside will be held at a later date.
